Ruben Amorim conceded that his first game in charge of Manchester United would have ended in defeat were it not for the heroics of goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The game ended 1-1 at Portman Road after Omari Hutchinson's curling effort cancelled out Marcus Rashford's early opener. Things could have been different, however, had Onana not made two outstanding point-blank saves to deny Liam Delap in each half.

"We could have lost if were not for Onana," said Amorim. "It was clear to everybody, he saved us two times at least. He did a great job."

Asked about the Portman Road atmosphere, the Portuguese said: "You are lucky, you have by far the best league in the world."

On his side's performance, he said: "It's hard to expect anything at this stage. That's why I was a little anxious. I felt the players were thinking too much during the game and that's normal.

"We started very well, but we should have had more possession after that. The guys were too stuck thinking where they should be. When you learn a new structure they need time to have some fluidity in the game. We've had two training sessions.

"What I learned today is that they are really trying. They received info and tried to use it. That was important. Even in the difficult moments I felt they were trying to do what I'd asked them to do.

"I know it's frustrating for the fans, but we are changing so much. We are going to suffer for a long period. This will take a long time. In that time we have to try and win games - I know that."
