Ipswich Town played out an entertaining 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Portman Road, maintaining their momentum after the win at Tottenham Hotspur before the international break.

The Blues fell behind early on as Marcus Rashford opened the scoring, but Omari Hutchinson responded later in the first half with a curling effort. Both sides had chances to win it after the interval, with Town arguably looking the likelier, but it ended level on Super Sunday.

The Ruben Amorim era made a fast start as Amad Diallo was allowed to make a run from deep down the right flank, shrugging past Leif Davis and dodging a tackle from Jens Cajuste. From there, he was able to deliver a simple cross into the box to Rashford, who stabbed it into the net to open the scoring in the second minute.

Although Ipswich settled, the visitors looked sharp on a break. A quick counter saw Bruno Fernandes pick out Diallo, who in turn spotted Christian Eriksen, allowing the experienced Dane to fire a shot just wide of the post.

There were clearly a few teething issues in Man United’s new system, which switched between a 4-2-3-1 and a 3-4-3, much like that of Ipswich. Diogo Dalot’s presence high up the pitch left gaps for the Blues to expose during turnovers, which Wes Burns did well in the 11th minute, cutting the ball back for Sammie Szmodics on the edge of the area. The attacker made good contact with his strike, forcing Andre Onana into a low save.

The atmosphere at Portman Road fell a bit flat as Amorim’s men enjoyed lengthy spells of possession. When they did push forward, they looked likely, but lacked the cutting edge to test Arijanet Muric. Alejandro Garnacho looked particularly threatening on the left flank.

Shortly before the half-hour mark, excellent play from Hutchinson allowed Liam Delap space to run towards the edge of the box and draw a foul off Jonny Evans. The former Chelsea man took aim, firing a powerful kick into the gloves of Onana.

Corner looked to be a good outlet for the Blues, and they came close as Man United struggled to deal with Davis’ delivery onto the head of Dara O’Shea, which was cleared up to Hutchinson, whose shot was blocked by Dalot.

Ipswich would’ve been level five minutes before the break if not for a stunning save from Onana. Davis picked out a brilliant raking pass from Cameron Burgess and beat Diallo before cutting inside and setting up Delap, who popped up unmarked to shoot from point-blank range, but the Red Devils’ goalkeeper made a superb stop to deny the striker.

Town were clearly growing in confidence. A strike from Cajuste was lifted onto the roof of the net from distance – another warning sign for Man United. They didn’t learn their lesson and Hutchinson made them pay, turning past Casemiro from the right before curling the ball into the top corner – akin to his strikes against Hull City last season, although aided by a deflection off the head of Noussair Mazraoui.

The fiery tempo from the first half continued at the start of the second, with Ipswich inches away from taking the lead in the 52nd minute. A strong run through the middle from Delap allowed him to pick out Burns on the right, who in turn picked out the striker in the box.

His clever flick was pushed away by Onana before Sammie Szmodics fired a deflected effort out of play for a corner. Man United were able to play a quick counter through Ipswich's entire team, playing Garnacho through on goal and forcing Cajuste to make a well-timed tackle in the box.

The visitors steadied after a string of substitutions. Hutchinson and Delap combined to find space, with the latter attempting his trademark long-range thunderbolt in the 71st minute and firing narrowly wide of the target.

The nerves were palpable in the final stages of the match. Town had a big chance to take the points as susbtitutes cobined, with Conor Chaplin playing a pass with the outside of his boot to Jack Clarke before the former Sunderland winger returned the favour, with Chaplin flicking the ball into the gloves of Onana in the 88th minute.

It was the last real chance of the match, as Man United held onto the ball in stoppage time without really threatening, with the two sides taking a point each in Suffolk.
