Former Ipswich Town full-back Matt Penney has joined National League side Rochdale on a non-contract basis.

The 26-year-old had been without a club since he was released by the Blues at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Penney made 26 appearances for Town, scoring one goal after being one of the 19 signings made by Paul Cook during the hectic 'Demolition Man' summer of 2021, joining on a free transfer.

During his time at Portman Road, he enjoyed a successful loan spell at Scottish Premiership side Motherwell before joining Charlton Athletic in League One. However, he hasn't played a competitive game since February 2023.

He now joins Jimmy McNulty's side, who currently sit in the play-off spots in the fifth tier. His new manager said: "Matt is a high calibre player, who has been at brilliant clubs.

"He has been training with us for awhile, we've been looking for an opportunity to sign Matt and he's agreed to join us on non-contract terms.

"We're really happy because he is a brilliant addition to the squad and will add real left side quality to us."

Penney will link-up with young Town forward Leon Ayinde, who is on loan at Spotland Stadium, but he is currently recovering from an injury.
