Ipswich Town legend Trevor Whymark has died at the age of 74.
The iconic striker bagged 104 goals in 335 games for the Blues between 1967 and 1979, and was inducted into the club's Hall of Fame in 2012.
Whymark, who won one England cap in 1977, started his career at Diss Town before being signed by Bobby Robson's Blues.
He also played for Derby County, Vancouver Whitecaps, Grimsby Town, Southend United, Peterborough United and Colchester United before retiring in 1985.
After retiring from the pro game he served as player/manager back at Diss and worked in Town's academy in the early 2000's.
As a player he was known as a ruthless finisher and among the best in the game in the air.
Twice he scored four in a game at Portman Road, once in the 7-0 win over West Bromwich Albion and most memorably in the 4-0 thrashing of Lazio that followed the win over Real Madrid in the UEFA Cup.
Whymark was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 2019, with his family saying they believed his heading of the ball during his career contributed to that condition.
Son Craig told us in April 2023: "Back in the 70s the old leather balls were much heavier than they are today - especially when they were wet.
"And they used to practice heading them every day whatever the weather. No one thought about what the consequences might be."
Whymark was always welcome back at Town and sat in the Director's Box with former teammates Bryan Hamilton and George Burley as the Blues crushed Charlton 6-0 in April last year.
Hamilton said of him: “He was the best header of the ball I have ever played with and a great centre forward to have in your team.
"He was always available and had an excellent touch, and who can forget his four goals against Lazio at Portman Road in a European tie – a remarkable performance.”
A statement on Ipswich Town's website described Whymark as 'one of the real giants of Bobby Robson’s first great side of the 1970s.'
It added: "With 104 goals from his 335 appearances for the Blues, Trevor Whymark sits sixth on the all-time list of goalscorers and will forever remain one of the great names of this football club."
