A memorable game up next as Joe Royle took charge of his first game as Town boss with his reign starting with a narrow victory over Czech champions Slovan Liberec in the UEFA Cup 2nd Round, 1st Leg,
A 69th-minute goal from Darren Bent was enough for Town, who kept their 40-year unbeaten home run in Europe going, but were beaten in the second leg on penalties.

Next up is a victory over Brian Clough's reds, who had won just twice in their opening 13 games in the newly formed Premier League, while Town had only lost two games.
Jason Dozzell's sixth minute header was enough for the Blues to secure their first win at the City Ground since 1980.

Two years earlier, Duncan's men were held to a 1-1 draw with the Cherries at Dean Court in the first game between the two sides in the second tier.
Mark Brennan was on the scoresheet for Town, while Shaun Brooks netted for the hosts.

Next up we focus on a victory over Ron Saunders' side, who had pipped Bobby Robson's side to the league title in the previous season.
Russell Osman netted the only goal of the game for Town as they secured all three points at Villa Park. Of course, the Blues would miss out of the title again after finishing runners-up to Liverpool this time...
Fulham 2-2 Ipswich Town - 1973
A cup clash next as Town drew at the Cottagers in the third round of the League Cup, with Trevor Whymark and Clive Woods among the scorers for Robson's side.
This result meant a replay was needed back in Suffolk, which Town won 2-1 to progress but were beaten in the next round by Birmingham City.
Man City 2-0 Ipswich Town - 1970
A defeat up next as Town's winless run at Maine Road was extended to eight games as Robson's men conceded a goal in each half.
Francis Lee and Colin Bell were the goalscorers for City in the top flight clash.
Swindon Town 3-1 Ipswich Town - 1964
60 years ago, Bill McGarry's side were beaten by the Robins at the City Ground, whose goals game from Bill Atkins, Mike Summerbee and an own goal from Mick McNeil.
John Colrain scored for Town in the second tier clash, which also saw the final games in a Blues' shirt for Roy Stephenson and Larry Carberry, who were in the side that won the league title in 1962.
Ipswich Town 2-0 Hull City - 1959
65 years ago, Alf Ramsey's side secured a home victory over the Tigers in the second tier, thanks to a quick fire double from Ray Crawford.
The forward netted in the second and third minute in the game.
Ipswich Town 3-0 Walsall
And finally, the first ever competition game on this day was a Division 3 (South) clash which saw Scott Duncan's Blues claim all three points over the Saddlers.
Billy Reed, Tom Garneys and John Elsworthy were the scorers for Town, who went on to win the league title that season and win promotion to the second tier for the first time.
BIRTHDAY BOY - 1979
One former Town player was born on this day in the form of Ricard Fuller, who had a short loan spell from Southampton in 2006.
He scored twice in three games, including netting on his debut against Leicester City and being sent off in his final game at Crystal Palace.
