Ipswich Town trio Sammie Szmodics, Chiedozie Ogbene and Dara O'Shea all earned caps as the Republic of Ireland beat Finland 2-1 in Nations League B.

All three players started in Helsinki, where Szmodics and Ogbene reached seven and 23 caps respectively by playing 81 minutes of the match. O'Shea, who played at right-back, completed the full 90 minutes.

The visitors went behind early on as Joel Pohjanpalo capitalised on a poor pass from captain Nathan Collins, running through on goal to make it 1-0 in the 17th minute. Striker Evan Ferguson had a goal disallowed before the break, meaning that Ireland trailed at half time.

Heimir Hallgrímsson's side responded just before the hour-mark as Liam Scales nodded in Robbie Brady's free-kick, with the versatile wide man turning from provider to goalscorer by firing home from a tight angle to win it in the 89th minute.

The result means that Ireland sit third in Group 2 heading into their trip to Greece, four points behind their next opponents and two points behind England in second.

Jack Taylor, who was named in the senior squad for the first time in his career, was an unused substitute.

Earlier today, Ipswich defender Cameron Burgess was also left on the bench as Australia beat China 3-1 in their World Cup qualifying match in Adelaide.

That result sees the Socceroos pick up their first win in the third round, with Tony Popovic getting a positive result in his maiden game in charge.
