Ipswich Town U21s came from behind to beat Watford 2-1 in the Professional Development League at Portman Road this evening.
Ayyuba Jambang and Jesse Nwabueze were on target as John McGreal's side secured all three points under the new floodlights which were installed in the summer.
There was heavy rainfall as the game kicked off which made it hard conditions for both sides, but the young Blues started brightly.
They had the ball in the net on six minutes when Tommy Taylor crossed the ball to Olly Davis, who tapped in but he was adjudged to be offside.
Town were very much on top throughout the first half but weren't able to brake the deadlock and were close to going behind before the break when Henry Gray made a crucial save.
The Hornets started the second half on top and opened the scoring on the hour mark when Watkiss hit a well-struck shot which, with the help of a deflection, went past Gray and into the net.
Watford were looking likely to score another but Town were able to equalise in the 73rd minute when Jambang hit a low shot across the Hornets' keeper and into the net off the inside of the post.
This sprung the game into life and it was increasingly open in the latter stages, with both sides looking for a winner.
It was Town who found it in the 88th minute when substitute Nwabueze hit a low shot at the edge of the box which found the corner of the net to complete the comeback.
Overall, it was a solid performance from the young Blues, who at one point looked they had lost the game but dug deep to get the win as Nwabueze once again showed his class in front of goal.
This was the first time for this writer seeing new signing Tudor Mendel-Idowu, who joined from Belgium side Anderlecht this summer. The winger was a handful down the right and showed his trickery.
It was also good to see defender Dan O'Connor back in action, who came on as a second half sub to feature for the first time this campaign.
The young Blues return to action when they travel to Charlton Athletic next week.
Town U21s: Gray, Jambang, Lewis, Mazionis (c), Ayoola (O’Connor), Turner, Mendel-Idowu (Nwabueze), Okunowo, O Davis, T Taylor (Babb 61), Roberts.
