Ipswich Town: Wes Burns reflects on 4-1 defeat away at West Ham

The Blues responded to Michail Antonio’s early goal through Liam Delap’s strike, but were punished by Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta, who sealed a comfortable win for the Hammers.

“It was just a difficult afternoon for us as a team,” Burns said. “There are definitely lessons to be learned out there.

“We’re still a squad that’s very young, still knitting together, obviously a lot of new lads coming in.

“There’s lessons to be learned and we’ll put them right over the international break.”

That first goal set the tone for the match. Town were made to pay for their mistakes in a similar vein to their defeats against Liverpool and Manchester City.

Burns believes that, if they were able to cut those errors out, they could’ve swung the momentum in the game and take a point or more back to Suffolk.

“It’s never ideal to concede early and it gives us a mountain to climb, especially away from home,” he admitted.

“They’re a team that were looking for their first home win of the season, so they were always going to be doubly up for it today.

“I think there were periods of the game where we were on top, we created chances. On another day, the momentum probably swings in our favour and we go on and win the game.

“It’s a frustrating day for us in the end.

“On another day, we get that little rub of the green and possibly nick another goal, go in at half time 2-1. Then the tide swings in our favour.

“To come out in the second half, we dominated the first five or six minutes, and then we had another unfortunate goal to concede. I think all the goals are quite soft, in all honesty.

“I think it was just a bad day at the office.

“It’s never ideal to concede early in games. We’ve conceded at the start of the first half and the start of the second half, which isn’t ideal, but it’s a process of cutting those out and we’ll be fine.”

With another international break now upon us, Ipswich will have two weeks to reflect on the performance and the result. Burns will be away with the Wales national team as they continue their Nations League campaign, but admitted that he’d rather have the chance to put things right sooner.

“It’s never a good time to go into an international break, really,” he argued. “As professionals, you always want to put the game right as soon as possible.

“We’ve obviously got a long period until we play Everton, but the lads will bounce back from this. We always do bounce back from a bad result.

“The lads will be champing at the bit to get back.”
