Ipswich Town winger Wes Burns says Suffolk will always feel like home after putting pen-to-paper on a new two-year contract.

The 29-year-old was the first signing of the Gamechanger 20 Ltd ownership era, and the first of Paul Cook's 19 summer recruits, when arriving for a nominal fee from Fleetwood Town in June 2021.

He's gone on to score 28 goals in 128 appearances for the club, playing a key role in back-to-back promotions from League One into the Premier League.

“When I first came in three years ago, did I expect us to be where we are today? Probably not," admitted the Welsh international, speaking to TownTV.

“The main goal for me was to achieve that promotion from League One and become a consistent player within a team in the Championship, because I’d not really done that throughout my career.

“So for us to go back-to-back the way we did was something beyond what any of us thought we could do.

“I guess now the next step is, can we be a stable club in the Premier League and can I be a consistent player in the Premier League?”

Burns suffered a hamstring injury in the Premier League opener against Liverpool, but returned to action as a starter in last weekend's 0-0 draw at Brighton.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's trip to Southampton, he continued: "The group of lads that we’ve put together here is one of the best groups of men that I could ever possibly wish to work with.

“I spent a long time at Fleetwood, I was there five or six years, but I never really felt at home even though I spent a lot of time there.

“I’ve really embraced the life here in Ipswich and I’ve met so many people outside of the club now that will be friends for life. I've made a home. I know I can always come back here and it will feel like home.”
