Ipswich Town attacker Omari Hutchinson has returned from England Under-21 duty for 'medical assessment'.

The 20-year-old had looked set to make his first appearance for the Three Lions at that level in forthcoming games against Northern Ireland (Ballymena, tomorrow night) and Austria (Luton, Monday night).

A statement put out on the official England social media feed, reads: "Harvey Elliott (Liverpool), Omari Hutchinson (Ipswich Town), Jaden Philogene (Aston Villa), and Sam Tickle (Wigan Athletic) initially reported to St George's Park earlier this week but have now returned to their clubs for further medical assessment. Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) will also play no part in the upcoming fixtures, with the midfielder remaining with his club on medical advice."

It's understood the issue is nothing serious, with Town keeping their club record signing wrapped in cotton wool ahead of trips to Brighton and Southampton after the international break.

Born in Surrey, Hutchinson represented England at U17 and U19 level. Eligible to represent Jamaica due to the fact his father Leon is from there, he did make two non-competitive appearances for the Reggae Boyz in 2023, but opted not to keep his international options open.

Back in March, he said: “I got called up for both, but for me I want to leave international out this season and just focus on getting promotion.

“There’s a lot of games and my body is quite sore, it’s my first season in men’s football. So I just said I want to leave it all out and just focus on Ipswich.”

Hutchinson scored 11 goals in 25 starts and 25 sub appearances when on loan from Chelsea last season, helping Kieran McKenna's men to Championship promotion. Ipswich subsequently signed him permanently for a club record £18m (which could rise to £22m).

He didn't feature in the early stages of Town's pre-season, but has started the opening three Premier League games of the campaign against Liverpool, Man City and Fulham.
