As we reach the first international break of the season, I think we can be fairly satisfied with our start to life back in the big time.

That might sound crazy to the unknowledgeable if they saw three games had yielded one point with two defeats.

But we have not been disgraced and have more reasons for optimism rather than concern. At least Manchester United made our performance and result at home to Liverpool more credible on Sunday!

Before the Fulham game, I was happy to see the transfer window close. It had been an exhausting one and that is just from a fan viewpoint.

How Mark Ashton must have felt when his head hit the pillow on Friday night is anyone’s guess.

In the main, I think it has been yet another excellent window. Yes, many of us were hoping for that additional striker to be added. But failure to land one in the end will not make or break our season.

The fact that no new signing arrived on deadline day caused some angst, is incredible really. Just like the sticker that says a dog is not just for Christmas, the  transfer window is not just for deadline day.

With 12 new signings on board across the window, we made a huge effort in improving our squad.

I am also a firm believer that it is our summer and January transfer windows combined that are the real marker of successful signings.

My thanks must be placed on record to the departing Freddie Ladapo and extended to those who were sent out on loan in George Edmundson, Marcus Harness, and Cameron Humphreys.

Whether we see any of those three in a Town shirt again remains to be seen. But they all played their part in getting us to where we are today. Their contributions will never be forgotten.

As good as our window was, the old Fuller Flavour positivity of the past two years was showing signs of very thin cracks as my own head laid to rest on Friday night.

Thoughts started to creep in as to how long exactly it will take to bed in our new signings. I thought of the 11 players that are available for selection across the middle five positions of our starting XI.

I could not make a clear case for a settled five overall and conceded that I am glad I am not Kieran McKenna. That and the fact that it is a nice problem to have rather than worrying about a depleted squad!

I was at Wimbledon last week and felt we misfired on a few fronts. But the lack of cohesion had me accepting that it was the first game of many new signings integrating into the line-up.

This two-week break could have been a chance to get the squad on the training field and build the togetherness and create a new bond. But with so many away on international duty, there is slim chance of that happening.

And without any further league cup action, it will be down to hard work upon their return and in turn, to develop as a unit in league games. But McKenna has been here before and is well equipped to do it all again, I am sure.

Saturday saw the third anniversary of Sam Morsy signing for the club. With the arrival of Kalvin Phillips and Jens Cajuste, one or two were/are wondering if we will see a new pairing in front of our defence some time soon.

But Morsy’s performance has put paid to those thoughts for now. What a warrior he continues to be. And an inspiration to others around him.

Whilst Omari Hutchinson was deservedly announced as the man of the match, Morsy ran him close. He has taken to Premier League Football like a duck to water.

As for that striker conundrum, Liam Delap was also imperious with a performance that was capped with a stunning goal. George Hirst will be back soon enough too.

The aforementioned Phillips grew into Saturday’s game, whilst Luke Woolfenden was solid with the yet again outstanding Jacob Greaves.

We deserved a draw and could have nicked all three points. I certainly saw enough to suggest that things are heading in the right direction already.

Foundations are clearly already being laid.
