Ipswich Town impressed in their Premier League opener despite losing 2-0 to Liverpool at Portman Road. Alex Jones reveals his player ratings.

Christian Walton

Seemingly brought in at late notice for his Premier League debut. Made some wonderful saves and had some good moments with the ball at his feet, playing it forward quickly and accurately for the likes of Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson. Really, really impressive. 8

Axel Tuanzebe

Continues to build well at right-back, which suits Ipswich's system where they transition between a back four and a back five. Looked very calm and put in some strong tackles. 7

Luke Woolfenden

The odd nervy moment - one in particular that almost ended in a goal for the visitors.. Not punished by Liverpool's forward line today, but a few things to learn from the experience, having more than held his own throughout aside from that. Great to see him make his Premier League debut after everything he's been through. 7

Jacob Greaves

Immense at the back, particularly in the first half. Got Liverpool's attention by clattering Dominik Szoboszlai with a fierce yet perfectly clean tackle. Cleared almost every corner out of the box and defended like his life was on the line. A strong Town debut. Only criticism is that he was caught a little high for the visitors' opener. 8 (Man of the Match)

Leif Davis

Tasked with marking arguably the best right winger in the world and largely stood his ground. His attacking nature always meant that there were going to be some gaps, with both goals coming from his side, but he was really impressive in one v one positions. Like Greaves, however, he has to take a bit of blame for the opener, although the nature of his role makes it tough. 7

Sam Morsy

Looked dominant in the first half and sprayed some lovely passes around throughout the 90 minutes. Some really nice bits of movement to evade challenges while shielding the back line. Won eight duels, the most of anyone in the match. 8

Massimo Luongo

Any questions over where he can make the step up to be a regular at this level should fade away quite quickly after that. Shadowed Morsy's performance in almost every way, particularly off the ball, where he remained strong and physical in challenges. 7

Wes Burns

Had the beating of Andy Robertson for a lot of his time on the pitch, but was maybe lucky to avoid a second yellow card for a hand-ball, albeit that the first booking was incredibly soft. Really strong runner on the ball and Ipswich looked a little less lively when he came off with an injury. 7

Conor Chaplin

Brilliant on the counter. His movement caught Liverpool off guard and his decision making was lightning-fast, getting Ipswich up the pitch quickly. Got into a few dangerous areas but maybe not as many as he did in the Championship, unsurprisingly. 7

Omari Hutchinson

A really good showing that proves this is his level, taking on his man with flair and skill. Exposed gaps behind Trent Alexander-Arnold but will be frustrated that he couldn't take one of his two chances in the first half. Drew four fouls across his 90 minutes on the pitch. 7

Liam Delap

For a player who looked starved of service and a little bit frustrated in pre-season, Liam Delap showed just why Kieran McKenna has been so keen on signing him. Some incredible first touches, with the one to beat Jarrel Quansah in the first half standing out. A powerful runner who just lacked the finishing touch. 7

Sub: Ben Johnson (57')

Probably brought on a little earlier than expected due to Burns' knock and took a few minutes to find his feet. However, he soon looked comfortable as Town changed their system. Will be interesting to see how he's used this season. 6

Sub: Jack Taylor (65')

Came in for Massimo Luongo and added a bit more energy, floating around the edge of the box and playing some neat passes. Had a few opportunities to take aim but was closed down quickly. Didn't look at all out of places and visibly looked happy with himself after a few strong tackles. 6

Sub: Marcus Harness (65')

Got into some good positions in the final third, impressing with the ball at his feet as he dribbled past opponents. Possibly could've done more to close down Szoboszlai ahead of the second goal. 6

Sub: Sammie Szmodics (74')

Played off the left and looked comfortable. Held his own physically but didn't have a great deal to work with as the game fizzled out in the dying stages. 6

Sub: Ali Al-Hamadi (74')

From the fourth tier to top flight in around seven months. Became the first Iraqi to play in the Premier League and refused to let it be a quiet cameo. Chased after everything, got into good positions, pounced on mistakes and constantly harried Liverpool's back line. 7
