Ipswich Town have beaten Everton and Fulham to the loan signing of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, the EADT and Ipswich Star understands.

The 31-cap England international is on his way to Suffolk to undergo a medical ahead of Saturday's Premier League opener against Liverpool at Portman Road.

Signing a player who started the European Championship Final in 2021 is a real statement of intent from the Blues following back-to-back promotions.

Phillips signed a six-year deal at Man City in 2022, transferring from Leeds for a reported £42m. The 28-year-old has struggled for game time under Pep Guardiola and spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham.

Reunited with his former Leeds team-mate and friend Leif Davis, he'll be looking to reignite his career under Kieran McKenna's expert management.

Phillips will join a midfield unit that also contains Sam Morsy, Massimo Luongo and Jack Taylor. He will become the squad's most experienced player when it comes to Premier League appearances (73).

It's understood the Blues are now assessing whether to continue with advanced talks to sign Swedish international midfielder Jens Cajuste on loan from Napoli.
