Ipswich Town are reportedly keen on Sheffield United pair Gustavo Hamer and Anel Ahmedhodžić.

TWTD states that the Blues are 'showing interest' in the two players ahead of Saturday's big Premier League kick-off against Liverpool at Portman Road.

Midfielder Hamer was named the Player of the Season for a Blades side that finished bottom of the Premier League after contributing five goals and seven assists.

The 27-year-old, a £15m buy from Coventry last summer, reportedly saw his relegation release clause recently expire. He scored a 30-yard lob as Chris Wilder's men started their new Championship campaign with a 2-0 win at Friday last week.

Ahmedhodžić is a 6ft 5in Swedish-born centre-back who has 24 caps for Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 25-year-old was a key figure in United's promotion Championship campaign of 2023/23 and started 29 Premier League matches last season.

Stu's verdict

With Sam Morsy, Massimo Luongo and Jack Taylor the only current options, centre-midfield is clearly an area of the squad that Kieran McKenna wants to strengthen before the transfer window closes. Today's announcement that the No.8 has been left vacant backs that up.

It looks like former England regular Kalvin Phillips is the number one target, but whether the Blues can strike a loan deal with Man City and beat others to his signature remains to be seen. He wouldn't come cheap. Tottenham's Oliver Skipp is another known player of interest, but again there will be competition.

It's wise to have several plates spinning and Hamer, who emerged from a Premier League campaign with a good amount of credit, looks to be one of those.

Town looked to be well-stocked at centre-back, with Luke Woolfenden, Cameron Burgess, Jacob Greaves, George Edmundson and Axel Tuanzebe all options. If McKenna is thinking about playing more a traditional back three this season though then he may want to add a to that. Of the aforementioned quintet, only Tuanzebe has played in the top flight.
