Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is keen to take a closer look at Jack Taylor in pre-season, revealing that he wants to try him in more advanced areas of the pitch.

The 26-year-old featured in 33 Championship games for the Blues last season, although only seven came as starts.

Most of those appearances were in deeper positions, partnering Sam Morsy in the pivot behind the attacking line. However, he was often used further up before he made the move to Portman Road, something which his manager will look to experiment with before the Premier League season kicks off next month.

Taylor started Saturday’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Fortuna Dusseldorf on the left flank, with McKenna suggesting that he could play in any of the three positions behind the striker. That may be required due to the lack of fit options out wide following injuries to Nathan Broadhead and Wes Burns.

“I’m not sure if he’s started a game there for us,” he said after the match at Portman Road. “Of course, he came on in games there for us.

We want to have a look at him across pre-season, really – in training and in games – in higher-up positions as well.

“We can probably be a left and right forward for us.

“It was good for him to get some exposure up there, he showed some nice touches. We need to have those options at the moment because we aren’t very heavy in those positions, so his quality is going to be important.”
