Former Ipswich Town star Finidi George has quit as head coach of Nigeria less than two months after taking the job.

The 53-year-old was only in charge of the Super Eagles for two games, having taken on the full-time role at the end of April following a spell as interim boss.

He oversaw a 1-1 draw with South Africa and a 2-1 defeat to Benin in World Cup qualifiers, meaning Nigeria sit third in their qualifying group with just three points from four games.

But George says the decision by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to recruit a foreign technical advisor led to his resignation.

In quotes reported by Nigeria's Premium Times, George said: "Given the recent changes to the technical crew, I believe it’s time for me to step aside."

He added: “I am writing to inform you of my decision to step down as head coach of the Super Eagles.

"This decision is made in light of the recent changes to the team’s technical staff. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the entire NFF leadership, the sports ministry, and the Nigerian people for the chance to serve as the Super Eagles’ head coach.

"Please be assured of my unwavering support for the team, and I wish us all the best in the future."

George is a legend of Nigerian football, scoring six goals in 62 games for his county and being a key part of the 'Golden Generation' which won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, the same year in which the Super Eagles appeared at the World Cup for the first time in the USA.

His time at Town was significantly less successful.

He was one of George Burley's marquee signings in the summer of 2001, costing the Blues £3.1million from Spanish side Mallorca, only to see Town relegated from the Premier League that season.

George remained at the club in the second tier before his deal was paid up in 2003. He made just 46 appearances for the Blues and scored eight goals during his spell at Portman Road.

He returned to Spain shortly after, before retiring from playing in 2004 and coaching youth teams at Mallorca and Dutch club Zwolle, while also serving as director of international football at Real Betis for a period.

George was appointed manager of Enyimba in Nigeria in 2021 and went on to lead them to the top flight title last year.
