Ipswich Town centre-back Cameron Burgess started for Australia, who beat Palestine 5-0 in World Cup qualifying.

The Socceroos had already progressed to the next phase, confirming top spot with last week's 2-0 win at Bangladesh.

Burgess was left as an unused substitute for that game, but he was brought into the starting lineup against Palestine to earn his eighth cap at senior level.

The match took place in Perth, which is where the Aberdeen-born defender moved to at the age of 11. His side took the lead just five minutes into the game at HBF Park as Portsmouth's Kusini Yengi converted a penalty to make it 1-0.

Adam Taggart's strike put Australia into a comfortable lead before Yengi and Martin Boyle struck each side of the half-time break to make it 4-0. 18-year-old substitute Nestor Irankunda wrapped up the victory with a late spot-kick, meaning that Graham Arnold's side end the second round of qualifying with six wins from six in Group I.

They'll now progress to the third round of qualifying, which will start in September. The draw will be made in the coming weeks, with the top two teams from the three groups progressing to the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in North America.

Ipswich players have now finished their international duty for the summer, with nobody in the current squad involved in Euro 2024. Former loanee Jeremy Sarmiento will take part in the Copa America for Ecuador, however.
