Former Ipswich Town defender Tommy Smith has signed for new A-League club in Auckland FC after his short stint at Macarthur FC came to an end.

The 34-year-old left English football when he had his contract at League Two side MK Dons terminated by mutual consent in February.

He made eight appearances for Macarthur during his stint with the Australian side but now joins Auckland, who are preparing for their first season in the A-League.

The club was granted entry into the league last November, when American billionaire businessman Bill Foley was announced as owner.

Foley owns several clubs across a number of sports, including AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League and the Vegas Golden Knights in the NHL. He also has stakes in FC Lorient in France and Hibernian in Scotland.

Smith will play club football in New Zealand for the first time, with the New Zealand international winning 51 caps for the All Whites since making his debut in 2010.

“Tommy is an experienced player that is going to be a great leader to the rest of the squad,” said head coach Steve Corica.

He was born in England but grew up in New Zealand, joining Town's academy at the age of 16. He went on to make over 250 appearances for the Blues, scoring 23 goals.
