Once every four years, we add an extra day to the calendar in the form of February 29th, also known as Leap Day. Ross Halls takes a look what has happened on this day at Ipswich Town.
Three former Town players were born on February 29th - Darren Ambrose, Niklas Gudmundsson and Mike Pollitt.
Midfielder Ambrose made 55 appearances and scored 12 goals during his three separate spells at Portman Road, having came through the Blues’ academy.
Forward Gudmundsson scored three goals in 10 games during his loan spell from Blackburn Rovers in the 1996/97 season. Town lost in the play-offs against Sheffield United.
Goalkeeper Pollitt made just one appearance on loan from Wigan Athletic, but if you are going to turn out just once for a team, it may as well be in a 3-1 win over Norwich at Portman Road, which happened in November 2006.
The Blues have played just three games on this day through the years.
The most recent was in 2020, when they lost 2-1 at Blackpool in League One after conceding a 93rd-minute goal at Bloomfield Road.
Prior to that was the 2-0 win over Plymouth at Portman Road in 1992. Chris Kiwomya and Steve Whitton were scoring the goals that season as John Lyall guided the club to the Second Division title and promotion to the newly-formed Premiership.
The other game was 60 years ago when Town beat Sheffield United 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Billy Baxter. Sadly, that was the season that the Blues were relegated from the top flight.
