Southampton suffered an injury blow in their shock 2-1 home defeat to Millwall yesterday.
Former Ipswich Town winger Ryan Fraser - who has provided eight goals and three assists in the league for the Saints this season - was forced off after just 19 minutes at St Mary's.
Manager Russell Martin told the Daily Echo: "It is a sore one. He took a whack on his knee. I've not got a clue at the moment how bad it is. He won't be available for the Liverpool game with the way he is. He is on crutches.
"Wee Man comes off and we lost a lot. We lost a lot of running and threat of assists and goals.
"The other guys need to contribute. We did not have Arma (Adam Arsmtrong) on the pitch because he was really tired. He was immense in the last couple of weeks.
"When they are not on the pitch the other players need to contribute as well. Unfortunately, we did not get that again."
Midfielder Flynn Downes has sat out Southampton's last four games through injury, while striker Ross Stewart remains a long-term absentee.
The South Coast club went on a club-record 25-game unbeaten run across all competitions between the end of September to middle of February, but have now lost three of their last four games - to Bristol City, Hull and Millwall.
Back down in fourth-place, they find themselves five points behind both Leeds and Ipswich in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Martin admits his team 'could do without' Wednesday night's trip to Anfield for an FA Cup fifth round tie.
Leeds United made it nine league wins in a row on Friday night, riding their luck when coming from behind to beat league leaders Leicester City 3-1 at Elland Road.
Daniel Farke's men are also in FA Cup action on Wednesday night when they go to Chelsea.
Leicester, who have lost back-to-back games to see their lead at the top cut to six points, also have an away tie against Premier League opposition. They go to Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
