Ipswich Town have signed midfielder Lewis Travis on loan from fellow Championship club Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old - who is primarily a holding midfielder, but who can also fill in at full-back - is club captain at Ewood Park and has played close to 200 games at second-tier level.

He made the second-most number of tackles in the Championship last season, with Blackburn reportedly rejecting an £800k bid from Millwall for a player contracted to them until 2026.

Travis subsequently started the opening nine league games of this season, including a 4-3 defeat at Portman Road, but has found game-time in short supply since early October.

Handed the number 28 shirt, he has not signed in time to feature in tomorrow lunchtime's FA Cup third round tie at AFC Wimbledon and will join up with his new team-mates in training next week.

He will provide competition to Sam Morsy (suspended for the next two league games), Massimo Luongo, Jack Taylor and Dominic Ball in midfield, and can also provide cover to the likes of Leif Davis (currently out with a calf strain), Harry Clarke and Brandon Williams at full-back.

Travis becomes second signing of the January transfer window following the addition of skilful winger Jeremy Sarmiento on loan from Brighton. Those two take Ipswich's number of loanees in the squad up to four, along with Williams (Manchester United) and Omari Hutchinson (Chelsea), with Championship clubs able to name a maximum five in their matchday squads.

Ipswich will have to deregister a player from their current named senior squad to fall within the 25-man limit. Lee Evans (long-term knee injury) and Sone Aluko (one sub appearance in the league this season) look the most likely candidates.

Rovers boss Jon Dahl Tomasson said of Travis' departure: "I have absolutely no problem with Trav. We all know he wanted to leave in the summer and then also wanted to go in October.

"He wanted to play the number six position, but at the moment we have (Sondre) Tronstad playing very well in that position.

"He's one of the more expensive boys in our group, so will free some space up in the financial department to get some players in as well."
