Former Town loanee Keith Andrews will assist new boss Chris Wilder at Sheffield United, after the sacking of Paul Heckingbottom at the Premier League club.
Heckingbottom, who guided the club to promotion last season, was dismissed after Saturday’s 5-0 defeat at Burnley, which left the Blades bottom of the top flight.
They were quick to announce their former manager Wilder as his replacement on a deal until 2025 and he will be assisted by Andrews, Alan Knill and Matt Prestridge.
Andrews spent time on loan at Town from Blackburn Rovers during the first half of the 2011/12 season, and he went on to score nine times in 20 games.
He retired from football in 2015 and was most recently the assistant manager to Stephen Kenny for the Republic of Ireland national team. He left his role when Kenny's contract as manager was not renewed last month.
The 43-year-old was back at Portman Road last week as he was doing Sky Sports co-commentary for Town's 3-1 win over Millwall in the Championship, with the game live on Main Event.
