The Blues had won the first leg 1-0 at Portman Road thanks to a goal from Alun Armstrong, but their run in the competition came to a end when they lost 4-1 at the San Siro.
Italian international Christian Vieri didn't play in the first leg but started in this game and showed his class by scoring a hat-trick while Brazilian icon Ronaldo came off the bench.
George Burley’s side was supported by a remarkable army of nearly 10,000 travelling Ipswich fans in the clubs second visit to the famous stadium.
The first time Town played at the ground was back in November 1962 when the Blues were beaten 3-0 by AC Milan in the first leg of the European Cup first round.
Town would go on to win 2-1 the second leg at Portman Road, but were knocked out losing 4-2 on aggregate.
