Marcus Harness insists that he doesn’t want to just be labelled a ‘super sub’ after scoring two goals off the bench in Ipswich Town’s 2-2 draw against Birmingham City at St. Andrew’s.
The versatile attacker has started just one Championship game for the Blues, where he found the back of the net in a 3-0 win against Hull City.
Since then, he’s scored a further three goals in the league, all of which have come as a substitute.
Asked whether he’d like to keep that run going, Harness replied: “I hope not!
“I’m not just here to make up the numbers. I’m happy to contribute and happy to always do my best and work for the team, but obviously I want to be more than just a super sub as well.
“I’m happy with how it’s going at the minute. I’ve just got to keep building and keep putting my name forward.”
His goals against Birmingham proved to be vital, helping Town earn a point on the road while extending their unbeaten run in the Championship to 10 games.
The second of his two goals was by far the superior, swivelling back on himself before firing a sensational volley into the net at the end of the game, but Harness revealed that he preferred his first goal, which was a much more simple finish.
“For the first one, Freddie’s chance was the harder one. I was standing behind him thinking: ‘I hope he puts this in!’,” he laughed.
“I don’t know if it hit the goalkeeper or the defender, but it landed right in front of me, so it was an easy tap-in. One of the best goals I think you can get, a tap-in.
“The second one, Cam [Humphreys] has done really well to get in at the back post. It’s just landed around me again, so I just swung at it.
“Obviously I’m happy to do that, but the points are the most important thing really.”
