Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has explained why he made a change at centre-back for last night's 3-0 home win against Hull City.

Newly-capped Australia international Cameron Burgess had started the previous 26 league games for the Blues, forming a strong partnership in the heart of defence with Luke Woolfenden, so it was widely assumed he must have been injured when his name didn't appear at all in the 20-man squad.

George Edmundson stepped in to make his first league start since February 4 (1-1 at Cambridge) and played an important role in the newly-promoted Blues picking up yet another three points.

"Cameron’s fine," explained McKenna. "I just wanted to put George in tonight. We thought he’s been training really well, has played really well in the cup competitions and I thought his qualities tonight against Liam Delap would be really important.

“There are not many more powerful runners than George so we thought we'd put him up against one of the more powerful runners in the league.

“We thought some of their pressing angles would possibly open up some passes for him as well, for a right-footer.

“Cameron’s been excellent as well, so it was just a selection tonight. As we’ve seen, we’re not tending to put a centre-half on the bench very often (to maximise attacking options), so they all understand that that’s the plan.”
