Ipswich Town skipper Sam Morsy said that his side ‘ripped apart’ Hull City at times during their 3-0 win at Portman Road last night.
The Blues picked up all three points in style, with goals from Wes Burns, Conor Chaplin and Marcus Harness moving them back to the top of the table.
Their home games have often been high-scoring thrillers, with a lack of defending making for open and entertaining games, but Morsy was delighted to see them maintain their attacking strength against Hull while also shutting them out at the other end.
“Going into it, we knew that they’re renowned as one of the best teams in the division,” he said after the game. “As we prepared for them, we saw that they do a lot of things well.
“They’ve got a possession-based style and they’re a good team. They recruited really well, it’s widely known that they beat us to a lot of targets as well.
“It was always going to be a tough game, but I thought we were bang at it today. We were at a really high level and it was a really good performance from us.
“3-0, it possibly could’ve been more. We dominated every area of the pitch, so it was a really good performance.
“You could see that they had a few really dangerous players who we had to keep quiet. That’s something that we want to improve as well. You can’t rely on 4-3 games too often, you don’t want to be conceding.
“We’re delighted to get the clean sheet, it’s really good. I don’t think they troubled our goal many times at all.
“It was a really good structural performance that was near our best. At times, we ripped them apart.”
Surprisingly, Kieran McKenna made four changes for the match, bringing in Morsy, Brandon Williams and George Edmundson to face the Tigers. However, it was Harness who arguably stood out above them all, making his first Championship start of the season.
The former Portsmouth winger looked sharp, playing impressive passes and taking good touches to bring the ball into space. He capped his performance off with a goal in the second half, which may give his manager something to think about going into a busy run of fixtures after the international break.
“It’s brilliant because he works really hard,” Morsy said about Harness.

“He’s very unassuming. He doesn’t moan, he doesn’t put his head down, he’s just really happy to be here.
“He was maybe a surprise inclusion today. I don’t think many people predicted him to play tonight. He’s had to work hard for his opportunity.
“He’s come in, played really well and got his goal. It gives the manager a selection dilemma moving forward.
“You need that. You’re never going to know your strongest team in August or September. It doesn’t happen, it takes time.
“There’s still time for players to break into the starting XI, and then like last season, at least in the first half of the season, the team is heavily rotated because people are competing.
“I remember seeing last year that there was a game, I think it was against Burton, where we played against them at the start of the season. When we played against them again, there were about eight different people in the starting XI.
“It just goes to show really. Because we’re doing well and winning games, you think ‘that’s the team’, but it’s not the case.
“It was great for him to stake a claim. I think he’s got quality which no one else has in the squad, which is really good as well, and I’m delighted for him to put in that sort of performance so he can put his hand up and say ‘look gaffer, I’m ready to play’.”
Morsy’s return to action came after he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in a 4-3 win against Blackburn Rovers, ruling him out of the trip to Huddersfield Town over the weekend.
Ipswich clearly missed the Egypt international, whose aggression and physical presence would surely have helped them in a gritty 1-1 draw at the John Smith’s Stadium. However, he knows that his disciplinary record will be crucial if he’s to avoid longer bans further down the line, which will be crucial as the captain of the club.
“It was disappointing to get five yellow cards so early,” he admitted. I think some of the decisions have been poor, but that’s a conversation for another day. I’ll have to be a little bit careful.
“My friend messaged me as well. He’s on five [yellow cards] in a different league. We’ve got Wes [Burns] on four, Vas [Hladky] on three as a goalkeeper. They give cards out so easily now.
“You’ve got to be so careful now, because ultimately, you don’t want to be getting 10 too early. That’d be disappointing.”
On a personal level, the 32-year-old is pleased with how he’s played this season, having captained Town in nine of their 10 Championship games so far this season while registering two assists.
“I’m happy with my performances,” he stated. “Having a look at who I’ve been up against, I think I’m right up there so far, but we’ve only played 10 games.
“For me, it’s about always progressing, improving and seeing how I can get better. I still think I can get better and show the best of me this season.”
