Ipswich Town defender Cameron Burgess was praised after making his debut for Australia in their 2-2 draw with Mexico last night.

The 27-year-old played the full 90 minutes for the Socceroos, starting alongside Leicester City's Harry Souttar in front of 50,000 fans at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas - the giant home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys.

Souttar and Hibernian's Martin Boyle put Australia 2-0 up, before Raul Jimenez of Fulham and Pumas forward Cesar Huerta levelled for Mexico late on in the second half.

Afterwards, Australian coach Graham Arnold said he felt Burgess had fared well.

"I thought he did very well," he told the media.

"His first international and the first time he has ever played alongside Harry Souttar or any of the other boys. I thought he fitted in very well.

"Overall I was very happy with the performance, but also, we can improve."

Arnold was also full of praise for Burgess before the match.

He told Australian TV: "Cameron has been very impressive since he has come in.

"I have watched him play in England a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed.

"He is a great guy, tall, 1.98m so a big, tall central defender."

Burgess was born in Scotland, but moved to Australia at the age of ten with his family.

He returned to England, on his own, at the age of 16 to pursue his football career.

He was capped by Scotland at youth level, but switched allegiance to Australia and represented them at U20 and U23 level.

Next up for the Australians is a friendly with England at Wembley on October 13.
