Ipswich Town are set to continue talks with former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe following a quiet transfer deadline day.

The EADT and Ipswich Star understands that the 25-year-old was at Portman Road tonight for discussions around a potential deal.

As a free agent, the former England youth international can sign for clubs outside of the transfer window. Following tomorrow afternoon's Championship home clash with Cardiff City, both Ipswich and Tuanzebe will use the international break to speak further.

Tuanzebe became the Red Devils' youngest captain since Norman Whiteside when wearing the armband in a League Cup tie aged 21. By that point he’d already had a season-long loan spell in the Championship with Aston Villa.

He was on the fringes of the United first team for two seasons, making six Premier League starts and Champions League appearances against the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig, a time when current Blues boss Kieran McKenna was assisting Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Old Trafford.

Tuanzebe has spent the last two campaigns out on loan – back at Villa (this time in the Premier League), at Italian side Napoli (where he made only two appearances) and, most recently, in the Championship with Stoke.

With a back injury slowing his progress, he was released at the end of last season and recently had a trial period at newly-promoted Premier League side Luton Town.

Following Thursday's addition of teenage forward Dane Scarlett on a season-long loan from Tottenham, it's ended up being a quiet deadline day for the Blues.

Kyle Edwards joined high-flying League One club Oxford United on a season-long loan, with Ipswich including a January recall clause in that deal.

That exit leaves one spot available in Town's 25-man 'senior' squad should they wish to sign Tuanzebe.

Meanwhile, young duo Elkan Baggott and Cameron Humphreys both stayed at the club rather than going out on loan.
