Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has outlined his plans for new Manchester United loan signing Brandon Williams.

The 22-year-old has been reunited with his former Red Devils youth and first team coach at Portman Road for the season ahead.

It was McKenna that converted the right-footer into a left-back at Old Trafford, a position he is on the record as saying is his favourite.

But with Leif Davis a star man in the Blues team, where will Williams - a player who has 36 Premier League starts under his belt - fit into the picture?

"He can play a number of different positions," said the Blues boss, when asked that question.

"He's very comfortable at left-back or at left wing-back. He's comfortable at right-back or as a right wing-back. He can even play central defence as well - I've seen him do it. I've had a little chuckle with him because I've seen a few things online saying he's 5ft 7in when he's a good six foot! Anyone who reads his Wikipedia page might be surprised when they see him.

"He's a really versatile defender who can cover a number of positions for us. He can bring different qualities on the left side of our team - having a right-footer there can bring a different dynamic at times and give you different attacking patterns to use. On the right side of defence he gives us another attack-minded and aggressive option.

"I think it puts us, in the full-back position, in a really strong place. With Brandon, Leif and Harry (Clarke), for me that's three of the best young full-backs in the division. Of course there's also Janoi (Donacien), an experienced and fantastic defender.

"To be successful in this league, ultimately that's where we need to get to in every position. It's not a first eleven game in this division. For us coming up, already being at full-stretch, we're going to need a big and strong squad with players at equal level to come in and out of the team. We feel like in those full-back positions now, with those four players, if they can all stay fit, we're in that position.

"That's where we want to get to in every positon to be successful."

Revealing that there was 'Premier League and top end Championship interest' in Williams, McKenna continued: "He's obviously a player that I know very well, which obviously helps in terms of the settling in period. He also knows Lee (Grant) and Martyn (Pert) in the coaching staff as well, which helps.

"He's a top talent for this level. He's someone who has played a lot of Premier League football and European football at a very young age. I know what he's capable of and how hard he worked to get to the level he's at.

"I think Brandon has said this on record himself, he certainly wasn't anywhere near the most talented player in his group at 15/16. He was in a very good age group with Jimmy Garner, Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong came into that age group, Ethan Laird who has done very well. It was a very good age group and Brandon wasn't always at the top of that age group.

"I saw that transition of him going from schoolboy to scholar and I saw how hard he worked and fought to get to where he got to. He's a player with real hunger. He shows real desire and commitment on the pitch and he shows desire and commitment every day in training. I saw him go through that process and go on to play Premier League and European football for Man United. So he's a great example of where hard work and commitment can take you.

"Of course he's coming off the back of a difficult year. We'll give him the best environment and support possible to fight through that process again and get back to where he's capable of. To be honest I do think he's a Premier League athlete and he's got Premier League qualities. He now needs to fight to get back to that point.

"It always helps when you've seen a player's journey and you can relate to some experiences you've been through together. I know he can bring good things to the squad.

"We will support and encourage him. He's coming here with a real determination to get back on track and feel like an important player in the squad again. Hopefully this can be a good spell for him.

"He's someone I'm excited to to work with again. He's certainly adds to and improves the squad and the team."

Asked if Williams, who made just one cameo appearance for Manchester United in the League Cup last season, was ready to be involved in tomorrow's big Championship home game with Leeds United, McKenna said: "Certainly. Look, he hasn't made any competitive first team starts in 12 months, but he was fit for most of the second half of last season, he's done a full pre-season, played and did well in quite a number of Man United's friendlies, so he's ready to be involved this weekend."
