Greg Leigh has left Ipswich Town to join League One side Oxford United for an undisclosed fee.

A free transfer addition from Morecambe, the 28-year-old proved to be a popular figure at Portman Road during his single season at the club.

The superb form of Leif Davis, plus an early season leg fracture, may have restricted him to just three starts, but the athletic left-back was still able to provide a valuable contribution over a promotion-winning campaign.

Leigh played well in the two FA Cup matches against Championship winners-elect Burnley and earned praise from manager Kieran McKenna after stepping into the side for a vital 2-0 win at Derby.

He'll also be remembered for his passionate final whistle reaction at Barnsley - that game having initially been postponed because of Leigh's 'ghost call-up' by Jamaica - piano playing social media posts and on-stage singing during Town's week-long promotion celebrations.

Leigh had a year left on his Portman Road deal, but Ipswich have decided to let him move on for a small fee following the arrival of versatile full-back Brandon Williams on loan from Manchester United

Leight told the Oxford United website: "It's exciting. I’ve played against Oxford a few times now and they are always really good on the ball and looking to get on the front foot. I met with Liam Manning and he talked me through where the club sees itself not just this year but in the future, and that really sold it to me. I can’t wait to be involved."

U's boss Manning, a former Town coach, said: “Greg is a really accomplished left-back and a terrific character. He brings that balance down the left, has had success at this level and knows the division. With Ciaron Brown doing so well there we now have serious competition in that position, which will be another big positive for us.”

Oxford are currently fourth in the League One table following three straight wins. They host Charlton on Saturday.
