Ipswich Town fell to a 2-1 defeat against Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium in their first match of a double-header against League One opposition.

The Blues went ahead early on when Leif Davis tucked a pinpoint cross into the back of the net from close range, but Saikou Janneh's looping effort stunned Vaclav Hladky soon after. Town struggled to create chances in the second half as the U's looked to capitalise, striking in the 89th minute through Michael Morrison to win the match.

It took the visitors less than two minutes to take the lead when Omari Hutchinson comfortably beat Harrison Dunk down the right flank. His looping cross bounced over to the feet of Davis, who tucked the ball into the net from the left side of the box.

The Chelsea loanee was in no mood to give his man a rest, taking him on again in the sixth minute before setting up Conor Chaplin in the middle. The attacker had two bites of the cherry to score from the centre of the box, but both were blocked before he fired the third out of play.

Hutchinson came at the U's once again soon after, cutting inside onto his stronger left foot before taking aim from the edge of the area. His curling effort looped just past the post, but Ipswich looked to be closing in on a second goal.

Instead, Cambridge started to gain confidence and take control of the match. Janneh took aim for their first real shot of the game, firing wide in the 19th minute.

He did end up scoring the equaliser for Mark Bonner's men on the half-hour mark, however. The attacker was able to exploit a gap down the left flank, rushing through on the counter before firing a looping effort over Vaclav Hladky from the edge of the area.

The Gambian thought he gave his side the lead 10 minutes before the break when he headed Jubril Okedina's cross into the back of the net, but his celebrations were halted when the flag was raised for offside.

Town loanee Ahadme was presented with the first chance of the second half as Cambridge played a free-kick over to Michael Morrison, who flicked it on for the striker. However, he could only divert the ball into the gloves of Hladky, who made a comfortable save.

Ipswich looked destined to score the third goal of the game when a mix-up at the back played Marcus Harness through on goal with Freddie Ladapo. The winger didn't have the space to set up his teammate so went for goal instead, firing straight at Jack Stevens before Davis scuffed the follow-up wide.

But it was Cambridge who looked the sharper side, threatening again in the opening stages of the second half through Janneh. Town's best opportunities were flagged for offside as McKenna opted to bring on Leon Ayinde for Massimo Luongo in the 56th minute, moving Harness into midfield alongsde Lee Evans.

The substitution didn't change the flow of the match as the U's came again with Ahadme, who was played clean through on goal. He fired a low shot into the legs of Hladky before Town could clear in the 65th minute.

A series of changes from Bonner gave Cambridge a boost, however, as Feijiri Okenabirhie picked up the ball down the left flank in the 71st minute, cutting inside and stinging the palms of Hladky from distance.

As the rain hammered down, it looked like a draw would be the final result, but Cambridge struck in the 89th minute to win the match when Morrison rifled the ball into the net from a goalmouth scramble, handing Town their first defeat of pre-season.
