Former Ipswich Town player and coach Kieron Dyer has joined Chesterfield's coaching staff on a full-time basis.

The 44-year-old was reunited with former Blues boss Paul Cook at the Technique Stadium back in March, joining the promotion-chasing National League club on a consultancy basis.

Now, after the Spiretires lost a thrilling Play-Off Final to Notts County at Wembley, he has officially become a first team coach for 2023/24.

"I came in for the last two months of the season just to give the lads a different voice," the ex-England international told the Chesterfield club website.

"It seemed to go really well, but I have unfinished business. I think all the staff have unfinished business, as do the players. I’m really excited for the coming season."

Ipswich-born Dyer burst on the scene as a teenager in the late 90s before making a big money move to Newcastle United.

Following retirement, he worked his way up the coaching ranks back at his hometown club before quitting his role as Under-23s boss in 2022 and subsequently admitting that being snubbed for the caretaker manager role, following Cook's departure, left him 'mentally broken'.

Having seen his place on the liver transplant list suspended thanks to improved blood results, Dyer recently completed his UEFA Pro Licence badge. It's understood he was in the running for the Swindon Town manager's job back in January.

Cook added: "I feel that the addition of Kieron will help us both at the top level and also on the training ground.

"He’s a real watcher of the game who loves working with players individually and collectively."

Former Ipswich winger/coach Gary Roberts is also on Cook's staff, while ex-Blues youngsters Armando Dobra and Bailey Clements - both of whom Dyer coached at Playford Road - are among the Derbyshire club's players.
