Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna says his promotion-chasing team need to keep their feet on the floor following this afternoon's 6-0 demolition of Charlton Athletic at Portman Road.

Conor Chaplin bagged a hat-trick, substitute Freddie Ladapo added two more, then Leif Davis wrapped things up in stoppage-time after Ryan Inniss had been dismissed for the previously in-form visitors.

With Sheffield Wednesday losing 3-2 at Burton, the Blues - who have now won six straight games on Suffolk soil - are back up to second in the League One table with five games to play.

"It was a good performance, lots to enjoy," said McKenna.

"We started the game with a great intensity, got the early goals and were pretty relentless right the way through from those who started to those who came on.

"It's a day to enjoy for the club with the Foundation day and another full stadium, but it's only three points. We've just said that down there.

"There's no bonus point for a performance like that, it's still three points. It's a step in the right direction, but we have to back it up on Tuesday.

"That's the focus now. Enjoy this evening with the families, but everyone be ready on Sunday and Monday to get ready for Port Vale (at home) and back up that performance."

Chaplin, having previously hit six braces this season, finally got his first hat-trick for the club to take his tally for the season to 25 across all competitions and 22 in the league.

"He got the third before I could take him off today!" joked McKenna.

"I'm delighted for him. He deserves all the good things he gets because of the character he is and the energy that he gives the group every day.

"It was great work from the team again to create the chances and he's such a good finisher.

"His first goal was a really good team move which he finished off as expertly as he does.

"His second goal is a wonderful pass from Nathan (Broadhead).

"His third goal was really enjoyable too. We were really alive from the set-play, it's a great ball from Massimo (Luongo) and Nathan is really unselfish. He could have lashed at it himself from that area, but he put it on a plate and Conor gets a lovely moment. It's his first hat-trick for us and everyone's happy for him."

McKenna continued: "He studies other strikers, he thinks about football and talks about football a lot. He lives and breathes it.

"There's probably a natural bit in there in terms of the instinctive movements in the penalty area. But it also comes from a lot of practise.

"He's a really finisher off of both feet and he doesn't need much backlift to do it. He's good with his head too. That makes him a such a dangerous player in the box.

"It's up to us to keep creating good chances for him and it's up to him to keep doing his job for the team in all aspects.

"Hopefully he can keep scoring and we can keep playing well."

With Chaplin often joking that he still sees himself as a striker, despite this hot streak coming from a No.10 role, McKenna said: "He was obviously a striker in his younger days and we spoke a lot in the first six months after I arrived about his evolution as a player.

"I think when he first arrived at the club he still saw himself as a striker and then he was playing more as a 10 in a typical 4-2-3-1.

"We spoke about evolving his game, evolving his position. I always say he's a forward player. He can play in different roles.

"He's scored when he's played as a left-sided forward, he's scored goals from the right. When he scored his hat-trick against Tottenham in the friendly he was up front in the nine position, which he enjoyed! He can score anywhere across the front line."

On Ladapo, who stepped off the bench to take his tally for the season to 19, McKenna said: "Everyone's delighted for him. I think that's probably the best bit of the day for me, that feeling of togetherness between the whole club, first and foremost, but also within the squad.

"You can see how happy they are for each other and how they're supporting each other. Of course everyone is pushing to play, but everyone is pushing to help the team be successful.

"Freddie came on with a really good attitude, really good intent, comes up with two great finishes, defended well and keeps contributing as he has done all season."

Reflecting on his team bursting out of the blocks to force three early corners and really set the tone, the Blues boss said: "We try and start every game like that, especially the home games when you have the home crowd behind you. It's really important to get that energy up.

"Of course the opposition can dictate that. Charlton came to play. They weren't wasting time. Dean (Holden)'s trying to develop that team and the culture of that group and they've got to find out where they're at. They came for a match, which not everyone does.

"It was important we got off to a good start and I think that reflects the mindset of the group at the moment."

Automatic promotion rivals Plymouth and Barnsley both won today, but Sheffield Wednesday lost 3-2 at Burton.

Ipswich, back up to second, are a point clear of the Owls with a game in hand to come.

"No, I'm still not looking at it," said McKenna, when asked about the League One standings.

"If we had two weeks off maybe I'd have a look, but we've got Port Vale on Tuesday.

"Look, the next five league games come in the next three weeks, so there's no time to reflect.

"We just need to keep attacking each game. Of course we're on a good run, but it's an incredible season and we're going to need a lot of points.

"The way to get them is to keep performing. I think the players showed today the frame of mind they're in, how they're enjoying and attacking each game. That's what we need to keep trying to do."
