There has been another twist at the top of the League One promotion race after Sheffield Wednesday fell to Forest Green Rovers this afternoon.
The Owls, who topped the table for a long spell during a 23-game unbeaten run, came into the clash against the league’s basement boys looking to get back to winning ways following their midweek loss at Barnsley.
However, Duncan Ferguson’s men came out on top after Jordon Garrick’s first-half strike secured the Scot’s first victory as manager and had a real impact on the promotion race as a result.
Wednesday’s second loss in a row means they remain second, two points behind leaders Plymouth but with a game in hand on Argyle.
Ipswich are third, five points behind Plymouth and three back from Wednesday, but now having played the same number of games as the Owls.
Town were not in action this weekend after their scheduled clash with Barnsley was postponed due to international call-ups, while Plymouth and Bolton moved their planned game forward to January after both made early exits from the FA Cup.
The only other game with a real impact on the promotion race this weekend saw Peterborough beat Derby 2-0 at London Road, with Posh now only a point behind the sixth-placed Rams as a result.
Ipswich aren’t in action again until Saturday, when they face Derby at Pride Park, but there are some important midweek games before then.
Barnsley are back in action and travel to Exeter City on Tuesday, while Wednesday will be looking to right the wrongs of the last two matches when they take on Cheltenham the following night.
