Portman Road will have a new ‘singing section’ for the 2023/24 season.

Members of the Blue Action supporters group, who have long worked to try and help improve the atmosphere inside Ipswich Town’s stadium, switched from their usual position in section six of the North Stand to Block A of the Cobbold Stand for the recent FA Cup clash with Burnley.

Now, with the trial switch deemed a success, the club have confirmed the new singing section will be introduced on a permanent basis in the Cobbold Stand for the start of next season.

A club statement says: “The designated area will house vocal supporters who are keen to play a leading role in both generating, and maintaining, a positive atmosphere during matches.

“The area is also designed to complement the lower tier of the Sir Bobby Robson North Stand in particular, with this recognised as the most vocal section of the stadium on matchdays.

“Supporters should note that the singing section will include drumming and flag waving, along with occasional fan-led displays.”

The club say supporters currently holding season tickets in Block A of the Cobbold Stand have already been contacted regarding the changes.

Discussing the trial switch for the Burnley game, a Blue Action statement said: “We think Block A offers many advantages; not least the better acoustics in the corner and under the old roof. We should still be able to link up with the North Stand and envision both stands bouncing off each other, which would create more noise around the ground.

“The North Stand is our traditional end, but with the way it was rebuilt, it is limited in the output it can create, particularly from the lower tier. Having another singing section in that corner should help spread songs further, and hopefully get the whole stadium singing as one again.”

Town have enjoyed superb home support this season, with an average league attendance of 25,667.
