Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna was pleased with his side's 'relentless' performance in today's 4-0 home win against Forest Green Rovers.

Conor Chaplin (2), Nathan Broadhead and Freddie Ladapo got the goals as the Blues dominated from the first to the last minute against League One's basement boys.

The comprehensive win ends a three-match draw streak, sees Town return to third in table and closes the gap on the top-two after Plymouth and Bolton both dropped points.

"It was a good start with early chances and an early goal," said McKenna.

"Of course that gives you a bit more feeling of control in the game.

"When you're facing a lot of bodies that lead affords you to be a little bit more patient, knowing that opportunities will come because they'll have to come out.

"I thought we found a nice balance between being patient but aso being really aggressive. We created a lot of chances in the game and had good concentration at the back.

"The subs came on and were eager to get amongst it. That helped give us fresheness later in the game. We were pretty relentless until the last minute.

"I think the mentality of the group and the way they approached the game was really good. We were set for the game today. Whether we had scored early or late, I had full confidence in the players."

Broadhead, a £1.5m signing from Everton last month, provided a superb assist for Chaplin's early opener and then volleyed in the second himself.

"I think he's a fantastic footballer," enthused McKenna. "We need to build him up in the right way, build him up from a physical point of view, help him understand his qualities and how he can be effective.

"But he's a very, very good footballer. We should enjoy having him here and seeing him improving."

On Chaplin, who is now on 17 goals for the season in all competitions, the Blues boss said: "It's another couple of good goals for him.

"I think he'll be the first to say that for a player like him, who is effective in the box, it's about the quality of the service and the chances that you can create for him.

"The players, as a team, performed very well in term of breaking the opposition down and putting the chances there for him.

"We know that he's a very good finisher in the box. If you can get him on the end of things in the penalty area then there's a fair good chance he'll score."

Town fans paid tribute to legendary former manager Sir Bobby Robson on what would have been his 90th birthday.

"It was an honour and a privilege to be in charge of the team on a day like today," said McKenna.

"There were nice moments when the crowd were applauding (on the 78th and 81st minutes, picked to mark the years Ipswich won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup).

"I think we scored in the 78th, which was brilliant, and then Leif (Davis) hit the post at the end of the 81st, which was a fantastic flowing move that started with Christian Walton. I'm sure he (Robson) would have enjoyed that one had it gone in.

"Scoring more goals is probably the only other thing we could have asked for today.

"It was nice for the fans to honour that landmark and nice that the team could contribute to the day."

Town, who haven't won back-to-back league games since October, now have a week to prepare for a trip to MK Dons.

"That's five games unbeaten - two wins, three draws - and we want to go and try and win the next game," said McKenna.

"All we can do is take it a game at a time.

"We'll have a little bit of recovery time now, train this week and be ready for the next challenge."

With Bolton losing at Wycombe, and Plymouth drawing at home to Fleetwood, McKenna said: "I haven't checked the table, to be honest. I'll see the results later on.

"We need to focus on ourselves. Today is a good win, another good performance at home. We need to think 100% about the next game."
