Sheffield Wednesday’s Marvin Johnson has been charged with violent conduct following his side’s game at Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The 32-year-old gave away a first-half penalty after tangling with Wes Burns, before Conor Chaplin missed from the spot, but avoided immediate punishment as the officials were unable to identify the offender.

Replays clearly showed it was Johnson, though, and he’s now been charged with improper/violent conduct and now faces a three-game ban.

He has until February 20 to respond to the charge.

Speaking after the game, Darren Moore said: "For me I didn't see the incident that led to the penalty but I trust that the officials did.

"What I should have done (post-match) was look at the analysis but I've not seen it so I can't comment.

"But, as I say, there must have been something there."

Johnson’s team-mate, Josh Windass, said: "Apparently Marvin Johnson elbowed somebody, but Marv said that he just had his arm up trying to stop somebody getting across him.

"Nobody really knew what happened, but we were saying to the referee that if somebody elbowed somebody else then you need to send someone off – and he said he didn’t know who it was. So make of that what you will.

"They (officials) just need to let the game play, especially with stuff like that.

"The ref didn’t even know what happened himself, and the incident happened at the far post away from the linesman with 11 bodies or something in the way.

"They didn’t claim for it, nobody did, so I don’t know what happened."

The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with Nathan Broadhead and Leif Davis levelling matters for Town after Michael Smith and George Byers had put the visitors 2-0 up.
