Ipswich Town beat Exeter City 2-0 this afternoon. Andy Warren hands out his player ratings.
Christian Walton
A quiet first half included a couple of routine catches and a comfortable save as he pushed Alex Hartridge’s hooked effort away, as well as some moments where he got his side playing out from the back. Did well in the air after the break, too, without being tested further. 7
Janoi Donacien
Town’s right-back, who passed a late fitness test after coming off early last weekend, was solid in the opening period making a succession of important headed clearances and helping repel limited Exeter threat. Lashed a rare shot over and won the corner which led to the second goal for his team today. A good display. 8
Luke Woolfenden
The Ipswich defence operated well as a unit today and Woolfenden was certainly part of that, adapting to the changing challenge as Exeter introduced more forward players in a bid to make something happen. Solid. 7
Cameron Burgess
In as the left-sided centre-half and was calm throughout this game, moving around the pitch well, sweeping up when he needed to and headed the ball well when it was thrown into the Ipswich box late on. 8
Leif Davis
The defender had a bit of trouble stopping crosses in the first half but got a handle on things, while also delivering some dangerous balls for team-mates to attack. Delivered the corner from which Marcus Harness headed in the second goal, before a bit of concern as he limped off with a hamstring injury. Hopefully it isn’t too bad. 7
Sam Morsy
Exeter went with an extra central midfielder to try and stop Town playing in this game but the skipper looked comfortable throughout, wanting the ball in tight positions and keeping it really well whenever under pressure. His clever ball opened Exeter up for the first Ipswich goal and he produced a handful of other through-balls to try and break the line. The skipper exemplified the control Town had on this game. 8
Cameron Humphreys
Another solid showing from a teenage midfielder who never looks out of place. Good on the ball, good off it and did what was needed of him. Had a shot tipped over the bar as he found space to shoot from the edge of the box. 7
Wes Burns
Showed some neat touches down the right and had a couple of opportunities to beat his man on the Ipswich flank, without being to truly find a way past, but did also find a couple of decent crosses which couldn’t connect with team-mates. 7
Conor Chaplin
Was quickly involved in this game with a succession of neat touches and clever movement, on an afternoon where he worked extremely hard, closed down Exeter players regularly and won the ball back in some important positions. He delivered the cross from which Marcus Harness should have scored and had the ball in some good attacking areas without threatening on too many occasions. 7
Marcus Harness
Retaining his place on the left side of the attack, the former Portsmouth man cut inside regularly and popped up on the right for two big moments in the first half. With the first, he probably should have scored but didn’t find the contact he really needed to meet Chaplin’s cross, allowing Jamal Blackman to save. But he produced the goods with his second big moment, coolly nodding back across goal for Freddie Ladapo to then put Ipswich ahead. Lost his man to head home the second and make this game safe, cementing his impact on a game which also saw him flick some clever balls to team-mates. 8
Freddie Ladapo
The striker stooped to head home after only 10 minutes, finishing well to set Ipswich on their way to a comfortable win. Had another header saved after the break and was on the move throughout his time on the pitch here but wasn’t always picked out by team-mates. Showed some good hold-up play. 8
Kyle Edwards (for Chaplin, 65)
On during the second half and produced some tricky moments for the Exeter defence to deal with, while also having a shot saved. 7
Kane Vincent-Young (for Davis, 74)
On following Davis’s injury and was solid enough during his time on the field. 6
Gassan Ahadme (for Ladapo, 90)
Great to see the young striker back on the field after his time out injured. Will surely play a significant role against Buxton next weekend. n/a
Kayden Jackson (for Burns, 90)
On for Burns in stoppage time. n/a
