Ipswich Town star Wes Burns will not be heading to the World Cup after he was left out of the Welsh squad for Qatar 2022.

Wales boss Rob Page decided against including the winger in his 26-man squad, which was revealed live on TV this evening.

Though Burns misses out, two ex-Town players will be on the plane - striker Kieffer Moore and midfielder Jonny Williams both made the cut.

Qatar 2022 will be the first time that a Welsh team has played at the World Cup since 1958.

While the news will come as a blow for Burns, who's played four times for his country and been involved in recent squads, it will be a boost for Town as they approach the packed festive schedule.

Burns may not have hit the heights of his award-winning 2021/22 campaign yet this season, but he's still a key member of the starting XI, having scored three goals and laid on four assists in 17 games so far.

Speaking recently about the chances of him going to the World Cup, Burns said: "I honestly would love to go if I get the call.

“If it comes, brilliant, but if I don’t then I know I have a big season here at Ipswich and the aim is for Ipswich to be in the Championship.

“It’s a win for me either way because, if I go to the World Cup then that’s brilliant, but the job I have to do here is exciting."

Boss Kieran McKenna added: "Every player wants to play in the World Cup and he’s had a really good 12 months or so and put himself into the picture for that.

“But I’d like to think at the moment, and I’m confident at the moment, that his full focus is on Ipswich Town."
