Chelmsford’s first team faced Rochford Hundred for the second time this season at the weekend and they brought high hopes and an optimistic outlook to the game, writes Annie Coulson.
The match was the last of the year for the Blue Boys and was on home territory with an excellent turnout from spectators.
They put out turned out a similar line up to the previous week, with which they brought home their first win of the season, so they hoped to bring a much stronger opposition to Rochford this time around.
Unfortunately, the 57-13 score at the end of the game did not reflect the performance from the Blue Boys, who dominated in certain areas.
Chelmsford’s forward pack was exceptional, building on their performance in recent weeks, and they consistently outclassed Rochford in the scrums.
The forwards once again showed great strength in driving the ball up the pitch and keeping the ball in hand but also showed flexibility with kicking and flash footwork all over the pitch.
Adam Cunnah scored two tries for Chelmsford, with the second being a particularly impressive effort.
Will Ferrier and Phil Dechamps both had an excellent game, both in terms of ground gained and supportive play; although a spirited match saw Dechamps in the sin bin.
Chelmsford showed a strong, united front in attack and brought a totally different game compared with their bout earlier in the season.
However, gaps in defence left plenty of opportunities for Rochford Hundred’s backs to break through and score.
Chelmsford’s 2nd XV were away against Chingford and lost 36-12.
As with the first team, the seconds felt that the score did not reflect the game and after a struggle to turn out a team all the players left it all on the pitch.
Chelmsford who put the first points on the board and they left Chingford feeling positive.
Both teams have high hopes for 2018 and look forward to testing their mettle in the New Year.
