Former Norwich City striker Chris Sutton has waded into the debate surrounding Mick McCarthy’s departure from Ipswich Town once again.

Having previously warned Ipswich fans to be ‘very careful what you wish for’ following news of the former boss’s planned summer departure, Sutton has been speaking on BBC Radio 5Live following McCarthy’s early exit from Portman Road last night.

Speaking with presenter Mark Chapman, journalist Rory Smith and former Everton midfielder Leon Osman, Sutton said: “I think Ipswich fans are in cloud cuckoo land, I really do.

“They’re in a fantasy world because he has done a fantastic job at Ipswich Town. They are 12th this season and I think that’s overachieving.

“They’re bored? Really?

“Ninth, sixth, seventh, 16th, 12th. That is overachieving at Ipswich Town.”

“I’m not going to use the phrase I really should be using (be careful what you wish for) but Ipswich fans are deluded.

“Let’s just wait and see. Maybe they should be looking at the owner and what he’s given Mick McCarthy over his tenure. Maybe if he gives the new man coming in money to spend they will move up the table and they will do better.

“If he doesn’t, then let’s just wait and see.”
