A former banker has re-launched a pub near Newmarket and given it a new name.
Moulton resident Philip Turner, who was a corporate financier, set up Chestnut Inns and bought the freehold on his village local, formerly a Greene King pub called the King’s Head, which he has renamed the Packhorse Inn.
He bought the pub in May 2012 and continued running it as it was for 12 months with a limited offering before closing in May 2013 for five months of refurbishment work.
Chestnut Inns secured additional funding under an Enterprise Investment Scheme attracting investors including David Minchin, husband of BBC News presenter Louise Minchin.
“My vision was to create a great local pub, but also to develop the blueprint for a style of hostelry, which defies pigeon-holing into the classification of pub, hotel or restaurant,to achieve a blended definition of all three at their very best,” said Mr Turner.
“I envisaged a place, surprisingly close to London, which tempted busy professionals to come and switch off for the weekend, retired couples to treat themselves to mid-week deals, businesses to choose for visiting colleagues and clients as a welcome alternative to faceless chains and locals to enjoy great food and drink with family and friends.”
Chris and Hayley Lee, who formerly managed the Bildeston Crown, achieving AA three rosettes status, have been appointed to manage it.
“This is a new chapter, a fresh concept and a different type of challenge,” said Mr Lee.
It was “a little daunting” but they had “great support” from the investors “who believe in us”, he said.
They also had “a fantastic welcome” from the local community.
“What more can you ask for?” he said.
Mr Turner’s wife, Amanda, has overseen the refurbishment of the bedrooms, which include large mirrors and beds and luxury touches aimed at attracting professional couples on weekend breaks.
