Plans for a new convenience store in the heart of a market town will be discussed by councillors next week.

Bungay Local Ltd has applied to East Suffolk Council for a new premises licence and off sales of alcohol at 14 Market Place in Bungay.

The company is proposing to open Monday to Sunday from 6am to midnight and sell alcohol in the same hours.

In the licensing documents, it said: “This is a brand-new business venture and the site, currently empty, is to be refurbished to a high standard and become a new, modern and professional general convenience store.

"The applicant would like to include some alcohol sales to allow the business to develop and offer the complete all-round convenience service."

The shop is looking to sell a range of products including newspapers, magazines, groceries, soft drinks, cigarettes, dairy goods, snacks, confectionery, and more.

It will also adopt the Challenge 25 policy to tackle underage drinking.

A licensing document says: "A staff training scheme shall be used for all staff authorised to sell alcohol.

"The training will cover the importance of preventing under age sales and complying with licence conditions."

The documents also show how they will prevent potential crime and disorder, including a CCTV camera system and how staff "will be vigilant and monitor the area immediately outside the shop to check that youths are not causing annoyance by congregating".

There has been one objection to the licence application with a summary of it saying: "That the long opening hours and sale of alcohol could encourage late night anti-social behaviour in the centre of town".

The bid will be heard at a council licensing committee meeting on December 4.

The licensing meeting will start at 9.30am at East Suffolk Council's Riverside base in Lowestoft and will be livestreamed.
