A woman has been left "upset" and "anxious" after her offensive words that appear to be aimed at her were scratched onto her husband's car.

Kate Duff said her husband had parked his black Mercedes on Granby Street in Newmarket overnight and that at some time between the evening of November 20 and the morning of November 21 the incident took place.

She said derogatory words had been scraped onto the side and bonnet of the car alongside the word 'Kat', which is her nickname.

Of the discovery, Mrs Duff said: "It was upsetting. I felt unsure and anxious. As a woman it puts me in an uncertain situation regarding my safety, and if anybody may be out to cause harm to me in anyway.

"It's obviously somebody who is angry enough to damage our property, knows where we live, knows my name and knows what car my husband drives - you just can't know what they'll do next."

She explained that she has lived in the area for around five months and would previously only stay during summer when she was back from university.

"I have a handful of friends, most of whom do not even live in Newmarket, let alone any enemies that would be mad enough to key his car," she said.

Split us up? Fortunately we like each other quite a bit and trust each other so it never arose any questions.

"For now, he'll have to be driving about in a car that calls his wife quite a nasty word - which is a bit humiliating, but it can only be as humiliating as you allow it I guess," she added.

She has called for anyone with CCTV or doorbell footage that may help police investigate the incident to come forward. She also urged others to invest in cameras if they can.

A Suffolk police spokesperson said: “Police received a report of damage to a vehicle on Granby Street, Newmarket that took place at some point between 10pm on 20 November and 8am on 21 November.

“Damage was caused to the vehicle’s driver side door with offensive wording used.

“Enquiries were conducted and the case will be filed pending any new information that identifies a suspect.”
