The founder of a pet rescue believes people are "feeling the pinch" of the cost of living crisis after several cats and kittens were found dumped in a Stowmarket car park.

Tara Scott, founder of Kitty Kat Rescue in Suffolk, was alerted to the seven cats and kittens which had been abandoned last Thursday.

All of the cats were collected and taken into foster placements for more inspections on their condition.

"This year every rescue is on its knees with intakes. We go to places as far as Birmingham and London," she said.

"The cost of living and the charges is just having a huge impact on animal welfare at the moment. People are feeling the pinch more than at the start of the year.

"There needs to be tougher regulations. We need to follow other countries where all cats are neutered by six months of age."

Ms Scott believes some of the group may have fallen victim to the cold and wet had they been found any later.

She continued: "If the lady did not take them in when she did, the cold and wet would have taken the smaller ones.

"They are going to take a little while but they do not deserve it."

The rescue service founder added that there is currently a "huge waiting list" for cats to be saved.

On social media, a spokesperson added: "We really need to stamp out cruelty. Rescues are on their knees struggling with the pure amount of pleas, abandonments and neglect. It really is the worst it's ever been.

"There are no excuses to dumping any fur baby. They are your responsibility."
