A Suffolk weekly market is still "surviving and thriving" following improvements in the relationship between traders and the town council.

The Wednesday market at Saxmundham was said to be struggling in April after a decision to move from its previous home in Market Square to Fromus Square had not proved successful.

So the town council decided to try rebranding the market as "Fresh Fare at Fromus Square" and controversially asked stall holder Kevin Hilliard to leave with his 'Sweets Pick "n" Mix' stand because it did not fit the new ethos of the market.

However, a few weeks later, the council decided to reinstate Mr Hilliard's stall following a public outcry.

Since then, the market has established a sense of local identity, providing opportunities for social interaction and low-cost alternatives to the town's supermarkets.

All traders have signed revised regulations and begun paying stallage fees in September.

Although there is currently limited space available at the market due to the size of some traders' stalls, a new stall will be joining soon offering vintage and pre-loved men's clothing.

The town council's chair, councillor John Findlay said: "We're very pleased that the
relationship with the traders has improved and the market is going well.

"But there is more to be done to develop the market as an attractive weekly event."

However, the monthly Saturday market in the town continues to be more popular than the weekly event, primarily due to increased footfall in Saxmundham.
