A Suffolk supermarket has apparently denied charity stalls the use of its store.

The East of England Co-Op shop, in Sizewell Road, Leiston, has refused permission for  some stalls raising money for charity to operate from the premises.

A poster on one of the town's community pages on social media site Facebook raised concerns about the move, with suggestions that stall holders were apparently being asked if they had public liability insurance.

The poster said: "I understand that several local people have been refused permission to have a stall to raise money for charity in Leiston Solar, not by staff at Leiston, but by the East of England Co-Operative Society.

"If you know of anyone who has had this experience or been asked for public liability insurance, please message me."

Other posters reported being asked about public liability insurance, while another said it was "ridiculous that people are refused permission to have stalls in the Co-Op".

A spokesperson for the East of England Co-op, said: “We have over 60 branches, including our Leiston supermarket, with inside space which is available for groups collecting for or raising awareness of a registered charity.

"So far this year we’ve hosted more than 160 charities.

“To ensure the safety of our members, customers and colleagues and to ensure we’re following relevant legislation, there are some activities we’re unable to support.

"However, where we’re unable to host a charity or good cause, we always direct them to the other support that is available through our Co-Op, including small donations, our grant giving scheme the East of England Co-Op Community Cares Fund and our Local Giving Scheme which is currently supporting more than 190 local charities chosen by our stores and branches.”
