A “jealous” east Suffolk man has been given a two-year community order after being convicted of coercively controlling a woman.

Glen Dale, of Normanston Drive, Lowestoft, was before Ipswich Crown Court on Friday having been previously acquitted of offences including raping the woman and stealing her phone.

However, he was found guilty of coercive control during his trial.

The court heard this involved three particular incidents, including one argument where he pulled the woman off a bed by her legs.

In another incident he broke her necklace when he grabbed her by the neck as he was “jealous” of her speaking to another man, the court was told.

A further incident involved the defendant persistently banging on the door of the woman’s property and being verbally abusive, trying to take her phone and pushing her around, the court heard.

The defendant told the victim that he hoped she died and hoped she was raped and told her to “say goodbye to your car because it’s going up in flames”.

In an impact statement read to the court, the victim said: “The longer the relationship went on the more possessive he got toward me until I could no longer cope with how he treated me.”

But she explained when she left she began “feeling bad he was lonely and had no one else” and so she went back to him.

However, she added: “I have so many questions about why he subjected me to what he did.

“It has had a long-lasting effect on my life. I would never know when he was going to switch and start shouting at me or hurt me.”

Judge David Wilson gave Dale a two-year community order, imposed 25 rehabilitation days and a three-month trail monitoring requirement.

Judge Wilson added during sentencing: “You have showed little or no remorse.

“Despite engaging in domestic violence, you perceive yourself as the victim of it. You need to take ownership of your behaviour and in that way there is a possibility you will mature.”
