A bowls club has been given planning permission to replace a clubhouse and canopy with a new timber-framed building and adjoining canopy.

East Suffolk Council has approved an application by Michael Skinner, from Badingham Bowls Club, to replace the existing pavilion at the club's home in Carrs Hill, Badingham.

The local authority had granted the plans permission in 2020, but the disruption caused by the Covid pandemic meant that the permission expired before building works could begin.

A heritage statement included with the plans said: "The proposed clubhouse and adjoining canopy will replace an existing building and canopy of the same provision which has fallen into disrepair.

"The construction of the proposed clubhouse will comprise of timber frame walls finished with black feather edge timber cladding, black timber framed windows and doors and a mineral felt sheet roof."

The canopy associated with the new pavilion will be built using timber posts and translucent corrugated plastic sheets.

A new painted timber sign will also be displayed to promote the presence of the bowls club, which is located between the Grade II-listed White Horse pub at the junction of Carrs Hill and Low Street and Beech Cottage to the west.

A small timber shed and timber fence panel will also be removed to make way for the new clubhouse.

The statement added: "The proposed replacement clubhouse has been designed to be sympathetic to the character of the neighbouring heritage asset and residential dwelling(s).

"The scale of the proposal is considered to be relative to the existing site.

"The choice of materials will both complement and enhance the nearby heritage asset
and sit well within its surroundings.

"Existing shrub beds and hedges currently screen the clubhouse from view of the heritage asset and will continue to do so going forwards."
