The mayor of a Suffolk seaside town has welcomed news that a controversial road closure is set to end ahead of schedule after causing some disruption.

On Tuesday, Suffolk County Council's highways team announced that Candlet Road in Felixstowe would be reopening on Thursday, some three days ahead of schedule after being closed since the start of September.

The post on the Suffolk Highways Facebook social media page said the council's contractor Howard Construction had said that progress on site had been "excellent" as a new roundabout is developed.

However, the highways team warned there may be some minor restrictions in place during the next few weeks, including traffic lights, narrow lanes and lane closures.

While Candlet Road has been out of action, traffic has had to use alternative routes along the Dock Spur Road and Langer Road or through the Trimley villages when leaving or coming to Felixstowe, which has led to concerns about congestion.

Felixstowe mayor David Rowe said: "I do welcome it opening again because obviously it has caused some disruption, particularly at certain times, for residents so that is excellent news."

"They have not gone to the maximum closure that they were given, but it has been fairly disruptive for many residents, particularly first thing in the morning so I welcome it reopening."

Originally, the county council had intended the closure to take place between May and July, but this plan drew criticism from then Felixstowe mayor Seamus Bennett, who described it as "awful" and feared there would be congestion as tourists arrived for the busy summer.
